Deals with Prosecution Allowed

President Dmitry Medvedev signed into force a law that introduces a possibility for a defendant to enter into formal pre-trial agreements with the prosecution. According to the law, in exchange for assistance in the investigation the defendant’s punishment may be substantially reduced. However, non-prosecution agreements (agreements to abandon prosecution in exchange for cooperation, as known, e.g., in the U.S.) are not envisaged either by the new law or by the current legislation.
