A group of Austrian researchers published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a leading U.S. scientific journal, proposing certain statistical methods for identifying "election irregularities." By applying this method, they show that reported irregularities in recent Russian elections are attributed to systematic ballot stuffing. One of the authors, Stefan Thurner, stated in an interview: "If not for manipulations, the United Russia party backing Vladimir Putin would have hardly obtained 40 percent of votes instead of the official 50 percent."
