After the police crackdown on the pre-inauguration opposition rally, Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said in an interview with Dozhd TV that he wished the police would act in a tougher manner. Two days later Ilya Ponomaryov, a State Duma deputy for Just Russia and a prominent protest organizer, said Peskov told him personally that protesters' livers should be smeared across the pavement over the wounding of a riot police officer. In a later interview given to a prominent journalist Oleg Kashin the official confirmed the authenticity of his statement concerning the liver and emphasized that the police would be dispersing the continuing opposition actions.
