Moscow Police Disperse New Year Opposition Demonstration

On December 31 the Moscow liberal opposition held its traditional demonstration in support of Article 31 of the Russian Constitution (on freedom of assembly), while the police reenacted its tradition of dispersing the demonstration. Dozens of demonstrators were detained, including 82-year-old human rights leader Lyudmila Alexeyeva, who was dressed for the New Year as the Snow Maiden (Snegurochka).
