Fugitive Kyrgyz President Obtains Belarus Citizenship

Deposed Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev obtained the citizenship of Belarus. Bakiyev fled Kyrgyzstan in April 2010 in the wake of a coup d’état, and obtained asylum in Belarus. The General Attorney’s Office of Kyrgyzstan has requested Bakiyev’s extradition twice, but to no avail. It appears that Bakiyev obtained citizenship of Belarus in August 2010, but journalists only discovered it recently.
