Tajik Health Ministry Discourages Barbers from Shaving

The Ministry of Health of Tajikistan recommended that the country's barbers stop offering shaving services for men in order to prevent the spread of HIV. “This is one of the ways to prevent spread of HIV,” Health Minister Nusratullo Salimov told a press conference on Thursday in Dushanbe. The Health Minister expressed concern over an increase in new cases of HIV transmission. The total number of people with HIV in Tajikistan grew by 17% in 2012, having reached 4,500 by the beginning of 2013. The number of people with HIV in Tajikistan was 3,846 on January 1, 2012. Previously, intravenous drug users constituted 60% of HIV cases, but this figure has now dropped to 46%. The number of children with HIV is 275, including 97 children who contracted HIV from their mothers.
