ECHR: Russia Not Responsible for Killing Chechen Militant Maskhadov

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) held Thursday that Russia was not responsible for the death of Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, but that its refusal to return his body violated his family’s right to respect for private and family life, as guaranteed by Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights. Before Russian security forces found his corpse in 2005, Maskhadov was implicated in several terror cases.
