A plane carrying the Polish president and dozens of other top Polish political and military leaders to Katyn, the site of a Soviet massacre of Polish officers in 1940, crashed in western Russia, killing everyone on board. President Lech Kaczynski’s plane tried to land in a thick fog and missed the runway about half a mile from the airport in Smolensk.
