"American Spy" Beats Russia in European Court

The European Court of Human Rights ordered Russia to pay €20,000 to Igor Sutyagin, who had been sentenced in Russia to 15 years in prison for high treason. The Court found that Russia had violated Sutyagin’s right to a fair trial and to liberty and security. Sutyagin was arrested in 1999 and ultimately convicted of high treason in 2004. The case was tried by a jury, which found Sutyagin guilty. The Federal Security Service (FSB) accused Sutyagin of receiving over $25,000 from the U.S. and British intelligence for secret information concerning submarines, fighters, and nuclear weapons. Sutyagin insisted that he obtained the data from open sources. Sutyagin was among the prisoners exchanged in July 2010 for ten Russian spies captured in the U.S. Currently Sutyagin lives in the UK.
