Russian Military Whistleblower Faces Criminal Charges

Russian Interior Forces Major Igor Matveev published a video address to Russian president Dmitri Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin unveiling a corruption network in the army and alleging that soldiers in his military unit in Vladivostok are fed with canned dog food. After the release of the video via internet, Major Matveev was sacked from the army. Moreover, as a regional army press officer announced, criminal proceedings were instituted against Matveev on assault and battery charges. Meanwhile, local prosecutors stated that their investigation showed that dog food had indeed been substituted for canned stewed meat to conceal a theft (although according to prosecutors there is no evidence the dog food had been used to feed solders).
