Political Opposition on Trial in Belarus as EU Calls for New Sanctions against Lukashenko

A number of prominent Belarusian political opposition leaders are being prosecuted in courthouses throughout the Belarus capital, Minsk. The Belarusian Prosecutor’s Office is basing charges on events that occurred in Minsk on December 19, 2010, when the Presidential elections took place. The European Union has declared the election undemocratic and is now calling for new sanctions against the Belarusian Government for prosecuting the political opposition. Specifically, the European Parliament has demanded that the venue of the Ice Hockey World Cup be changed; Belarus is scheduled to host the event in 2014.
