Russian Senate Speaker Dismissed for Criticizing Ruling Party

Sergei Mironov, the Chairman of the Federation Council (Russia’s upper parliamentary chamber), lost his office. City legislators in St. Petersburg, which Mironov represents in the Council, revoked his mandate; this revocation apparently results in an automatic dismissal from the Chairman’s office. The dismissal was initiated by the ruling United Russia party, which was unhappy that Mironov, the leader of the competing Just Russia party, had criticized St. Petersburg management (belonging to United Russia).
