Russian Senate Speaker Faces Dismissal for Criticizing St Petersburg Mayor

Sergei Mironov, speaker of the Federation Council (Russia’s upper parliamentary chamber), may be removed from the Council after demanding the resignation of St. Petersburg governor Valentina Matvienko. City legislators in St. Petersburg, which Mironov represents in the Council, are apparently outraged that he has questioned the city’s management, and they plan to seek the revocation of his mandate to represent the city. Boris Gryzlov, speaker of the Duma (the lower parliamentary chamber) and a member of the ruling United Russia party, expressed his supported for the dismissal of Mironov, who is the leader of the competing Just Russia party.
